The Lotus Blooms in Murky Waters

I moved to Red Springs, NC from Atlanta in 2019 and rented a little house, which I finally purchased. Red Springs is in Robeson County, the seat of the Lumbee Nation. Having worked in African American and Indigenous communities throughout my career, Red Springs is a small town of 3,000 that is very diverse, A small number of citizens are cultivating the arts, of which I am involved. I am the president of the Red Springs Arts Council. 

Shortly after moving there, I became involved with a group of Indigenous women who had formed a group called In/divisible, of which I became a part. Our first project was this mural. The lotus blossoms represent efforts to overcome violence against women. Despite these crimes against our bodies, we rise like lotus blossoms in murky waters. 

I created two unique picture quilts for the Atlanta and Azalea Chapters of the Links. This online project was a challenge but in the end, it turned out to be exquisite.

Based on the universal truth of ancestry (everyone has an ancestor) I began working on the First Congregational Agans in 2010 and updated the artwork in 2019, which I started in 2017.

I've done several Agans (ancestral memory cloths inspired by Yoruba Egungun masquerades). Unlike most, the First Congregational Church Agans now spans 14 years of my career. 

A commission by the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs, these artworks showcase the endless possibilities of digital media.

Storm was part of a group show at the University of South Florida that imagined a conversation between Zora Neale Hurston and Ethiopian writer... I imagined that they would discuss climate change via storms. Storms figure prominently in the writings of Hurston.
