In January, I visited the African American Cemetery in Lithonia. The cemetery is located on Bruce Street, an important street in the neighborhood that was also home to the first African American public school in Dekalb County.
This grave marker was place by Haugabrooks Funeral Home, an historical mortuary in Atlanta founded in 1929. You can learn more about the funeral home by visiting this link: http://www.haugabrooks.com/aboutus.htm.
I also started working on an antebellum gown, a textile sculpture that would hold the photographs of the ancestors from Lithonia. I thought it interesting that the decorative elements on the dress resembled the Haugabrooks grave marker.
